“IS THAT A SERIOUS QUESTION?”

It was. And I felt like a fool for asking.

“She won’t get in the way, I promise.”

Lyle’s expression was thoughtful as he prepared papers for his next case, scrolling through the computer and making check marks on his clipboard.

“I saw one the other day. In the office after you left.”

“What?” He’d lost me.

“A mouse. Remember we talked about that? Mice and insects. Bad in a morgue. Has a way of... skewing the data on a corpse.”

I didn’t ask for details. I was pretty sure I didn’t want them. “What does that have to do with bringing my kitten to work with me to keep me company?”

He sent me a small smile, looking pleased with himself. “If she comes, she needs to earn her place. No freeloading at the mortuary. It’s a thing.”

I was pretty sure it was only a thing since he’d just made it up. “Are you telling me she needs to catch the mice?”

He nodded, standing back and double-checking what he’d written down. “That’s right.”

“I’m pretty sure she’s not that kind of cat,” I added dryly. Lois wasn’t like any kind of cat I’d ever owned growing up. I still wasn’t sure how I felt about that.

“Those are the conditions. Oh, and the suit.”

“You want me to dress her?”

“Mice and insects are bad. Cat hair? Not any better. You’ll have to come up with some kind of suit when she’s in here, to keep the hair down. And she’s not allowed on the tables with any of the bodies—all that fur floating about.”

I blinked at the picture that conjured in my head. “I think I can make sure that doesn’t happen.”

“Good. Then are you going to let her out of the truck? It’s cold out there.”

“What makes you think I brought her with me? I could have been checking for tomorrow,” I said.

His brows rose. “She’s Gilly’s kitten, right? You’d better go tell her to get her little, furry butt in here.”

“I didn’t think you talked to them.”

“Nope, there are perks to being just human. I consider not having to listen to that cat one of them.”

I could relate. I headed for the door. “I’ll be right back, then.”

“Hey.” I turned in time to catch a set of old, folded scrubs as they hit me in the chest. “There’s needle and thread in the bottom drawer out front. See what you can do to get her covered before she comes in here. Oh, and I have to leave at eleven o’clock. I have a meeting downtown at the station to go over my findings about the recent death of a homeless man that was found dead a few days ago.”

“Did he freeze to death?” I worried my lip at the thought. Lyle looked up at me, his expression grave. “No. Maybe it would have been better if he had.”

I fingered the worn material, my mind racing as I headed for the door. But I wasn’t thinking about Lyle Turner’s latest case.

A half hour later, I was struggling not to laugh.
